Hello to all area high school students, teachers, family, and friends.
Over the last twenty years I have been privileged to jury many high school shows across Southern and Central Indiana. This exhibition of high school work is one of the finest I have had the opportunity to witness.
The dedication and abilities of the students and their teachers is apparent in the high quality work that was entered to by juried. Due to the constraints of space, there were many works that were not selected for inclusion in this exhibit. Those students whose work was not included should not be disheartened. Your work was already recognized for being of high quality by your teachers who included it to be juried. I am certain that your work will be recognized at your individual high school art exhibits as well.
For those students whose work was selected to be included, you should be very proud and recognize that your work did stand apart from the group. I specifically looked for quality in technique and content in the subject matter. I sought to select works that moved beyond meeting the requirements of the assignment and demonstrated the student’s talent and dedication to excellence.
I want to recognize the Best of Show winner, Katie Gaston from McLean High School. Her excellent Fiber entry, Fashion Gone Green, showcases her individual talent and personal interests in an object that exemplifies the criteria by which I judged the show. The dress combines creativity, technique, and content into a work that transcends the medium and becomes a work of art.
In closing, I very much appreciate the opportunity to jury the 2010 Annual Student Exhibition at the Swope Art Museum. Best wishes in all of your future endeavors!
