From the Juror

It was my pleasure to judge the 46th Annual Student Art Exhibition at the Swope Art Museum on March 2nd. I felt there were a variety of levels of expertise and of work entered by the area high schools. I usually refer to the elements and principals of design when judging student work. I also look for original subject matter, dialogue with the viewer and “mark making” in the piece is very important to me. I loved the excellent craftsmanship and whimsy of the best of show piece—Aubrey Clark’s Tipping Point. The ceramics exhibited good craftsmanship, interesting carving and detail, and several glaze techniques. The sculpture pieces were produced in an interesting fashion by use of simple materials–Katelyn Schmidt’s The Origin, Jo Anna Muniz‘s assemblage, the book and paper pieces, and the welding of the Wonka Wonderland piece. The Photo area had great imagery and close-ups and distorted the realism. I chose three collage pieces for the Mixed Media category. One was 3D, using recycled mat board, and two other collage pieces, but there was actually only one medium used: paper (mats or magazine images). The drawing category had portraits with interesting softness or bold marks and emphasis on value study. I felt the young artists were observant, the illustrations have bits of fantasy, nature and design. All had interesting line (marks), value and texture. The textiles were planned with woven patterns and simple form.

To the young artists and teachers working together, I feel presentation is very important if you are being represented by the museum. White mats look best on graphite and brightly colored work. Black mats are great for rich blacks and some colorful pieces but can detract from the artist’s marks. I also want to encourage the young artists to take advantage of the galleries at this great museum and at the area college galleries. You have an abundance of nature sites and interesting buildings/architecture in the area for landscapes.

Best of luck with future plans in FINE ARTS!
