From the Juror
Congratulations to all the students involved in this year’s exhibition. I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to see first hand the incredible level of talent and artistic vision that is being demonstrated in schools today. It was refreshing to see such energetic, unhindered, creative expression.
When selecting works for this show, several things caught my eye: first, technical ability and use of medium; and second, what the individuals expressed through their art. So much of art is about both the objective and subjective. When proficient technical ability and unique individual expression collided, this resulted in a work that, I felt, warranted an award. Each of the works I selected for an award moved me in some way, whether it was to contemplate cultural and social influences, imagine a narrative, or just left me smiling to myself.
Thank you for the opportunity to review your work. Thank you for sharing – that is the first step. Keep it up! I cannot express how awestruck I was at the level of talent. As artists, we can only strive to continue to develop our craft and to move people with what we have to say through drawing, painting, sculpting, photographing, and designing.
I would also like to thank the Swope Art Museum for asking me to serve as juror. It was a pleasure to jury this show, on all accounts.
Warmest regards,
