From Jeffrey Grove:

It is a privilege to have been asked to serve as Juror for the 68th Annual Wabash Valley Juried Exhibition. The Swope Art Museum must be applauded for their continuing commitment to honoring and recognizing the talented artists of the region, who are, as this selection demonstrates, a highly attuned and sophisticated group.

In this exhibition, paintings ranging from purely abstract to the hyper-real hang alongside photographs in every scale, of every subject. It is also inspiring to see work by metal smiths, woodcarvers, and textile artists included among large and small scale sculptures that are sometimes humorous and perhaps, at times, even critical.

Having been born and raised in Southern Illinois, I sensed a familiarity and kinship with much of the work submitted for this exhibition. Not that these works could not have been produced anywhere, or are marked by some particular sense of Regionalism, rather many of them capture a spirit or ineffable sense of place that is particularly familiar to someone from this part of the country. Each of the artists included in the exhibition is to be commended for their commitment, curiosity, and sincere desire to communicate with others through their work.
