Images of flowing river water flood the work of Ralph Larmann, who grew up along the Ohio River in Cincinnati. Larmann works in a narrative style rife with metaphor that is reminiscent of the Regionalist work of Grant Wood and Thomas Hart Benton. Larmann explains, “Like folklore, which reflects a balance of both fact and fiction, my work relies on both realist and exaggerated visual forms.” The interactions depicted in Paradoxical Currents will appeal to the curiosity of viewers, inviting them to ponder symbolic and absurd dynamic caricatures of the river. Larmann, an associate professor of art at the University of Evansville, currently resides near the confluence of the Ohio and Wabash Rivers in Newburgh, Indiana. This exhibition is presented as part of Terre Haute’s 2013 Year of the River festivities.
