The Art of William T. Turman

September 7 – October 20, 2012

Education Gallery

In honor of the first president of the Board of Managers, William T. Turman, this exhibition is drawn from Turman’s work in the Swope collection and the collection of Indiana State University. Prior to his 18-year service on the Swope Board, Turman headed the art department at Indiana State Normal School (now Indiana State University), where he influenced young artists and art teachers for 40 years. With deep roots in the area, Turman documented the region’s people, history and landscape as well as those from his travels. The paintings in this exhibition illuminate the artistic impact of this important figure in our local culture.
