Tips for Visiting the Swope

Look, but don’t touch

While we encourage you to engage with the art in the Swope, please avoid touching any artworks. Paintings and other works of art are fragile and the natural oils on your skin could damage the surface.

Let us store your belongings

Please check any backpacks, large bags, umbrellas, or other articles at our Welcome Desk. Coat racks are located near the restrooms. Please note: The Museum bans weapons of any type on the premises.

Take a picture; it’ll last longer

See a work of art on display that you love? Sketching with pencils is always encouraged. Handheld still photography is allowed in most areas of the Museum, except in certain temporary exhibitions. See below for the complete photography and sketching policies. Postcards and catalogues featuring selected artworks are available for sale at the Welcome Desk.

Enjoy food and drinks in Downtown Terre Haute

A delicious assortment of food, desserts, coffee, and other items is available in nearby restaurants in Downtown Terre Haute, but please do not bring any food or drink into the Museum.  For a list of nearby restaurants, please ask at the Welcome Desk.

Kids, bring your parents

We encourage art lovers of all ages to visit the Swope, but children under 12 should be accompanied by an adult. Resources for enjoying art with young children are available at the Welcome Desk.

Photography

Visitors are permitted to take photographs in the galleries for private, non-commercial use only. Videotaping is also allowed. Photography and videotaping in the building must use existing gallery light only (flash photography is prohibited). Tripods are not allowed on the premises.

Some works of contemporary art, or works on loan from private collections or other institutions, may not be photographed or videotaped. Be sure to check the artwork’s label. Photographs and videos may not be reproduced, published, distributed, transferred, sold or otherwise commercially exploited without express written permission.
